Unclear Structure

Hi. Could you please help me with the sentence in bold? I cannot understand its structure.

Many courses, years, curriculum standards, and sport management associations later, that first course has evolved into the academic field of study that exists today."

Hi. Thank you for your reply. Actually, the main part of my problem is with the rest of the sentence. What is the role of "that"? Could you please rephrase the sentence? Thank you so much.

WildblueWhat is the role of "that"?
It’s a demonstrative determiner. That first course refers back to the first mentioned of several courses.
