Unchanged(chess)

What does 'unchanged' mean in:

Unchanged in 1400 years, the knight has had variations of the same shape,and has moved around the board in the same way
when there where variation?What does the author mean?

The knight in chess has always been represented by a horse's head so, in that respect, it has remain unchanged. However, people have made that head in different ways over the years so, in that respect, it has varied

You are quite right. The knight can be represented in many ways and is then understood by its position on the board and the moves that it makes. Here it is as a walrus!

The point is that the design of the knight has always been based on a horse's head. There may be variations; the horse may be given a rider, the horse may be made to look more like a dragon, the horse's head may be so stylized that it only suggests the shape of a horse's head, but it is always based in some degree on a horse's head.
