Unbeknownst

1 - Unbeknownst to me, John was planning to go there.

Is the above sentence something you can say in everyday speech? If no, how can you express the same meaning with different words (without being too wordy)? I think that if I said

2 - I didn't know John was planning to go there

the meaning would be slightly different because the focus would be on "I didn't know", not on "John was planning to go there".
