ultimately

We must come up with a seamless way to support scientific progress and to administer the treatments we have, in order ultimately to alleviate as much suffering as possible.

Do you think it is correct to insert 'ultimately' between order and to? What does it modify?

Thank you

book=Third&va=fundamentally <doubted not that I should ultimately succeed -- Mary W. Hall b. Hume> ----------- I would use the other terms in the above, as ultimately has too many meanings, which are not identical: If you mean "basically/essentially" I think this is more clear: We must come up with a seamless way to support scientific progress and to administer the treatments we have, basically/ultimately in order to alleviate as much suffering as possible.

  • If you mean "fundamentally / in a very serious manner" this might be better: We must come up with a seamless way to support scientific progress and to administer the treatments we have, in order to fundamentally/ultimately alleviate as much suffering as possible.

I see nothing wrong with

This would also work, IMO, if you want to avoid the split-infinitive:

We must come up with a seamless way to support scientific progress and to administer the treatments we have, in order to alleviate fundamentally/ultimately as much suffering as possible.
