UK gearboxes

My question is not strictly on usage.english, but rather about english.gearboxes.usage. I'm a continental and have driven across UK roads several times, but always with my own car, sitting on the left seat and with the manual gearbox (stick shift) by my right hand (left-to-right: 1st&2nd, 3rd&4th, 5th&backw.)
But now I have a reservation for a rented car. I don't want to seem too clumsy the first time I will handle the stick with my left hand, so my question is: is it everything symmetrical, I mean, is the order (right-to-left) 1st&2nd, 3rd&4th, 5th&backw.?
Regards,
D.

usage. I'm a continental and have driven across UK roads ... [/nq] The position for the reverse gear varies from car to car, but the basic form is still an H-shape, accessed top/bottom/top/bottom/top: 1st in the upper left (away from the driver) 2nd in the lower left 3rd in the upper right (towards the driver) 4th in the lower right 5th (in my Citroen) at the top, to the right of 3rd.

Oh and the clutch is still operated with your left foot that is, the pedals aren't reversed. (Just in case you wondered.)

We usually drive along our roads, and only occasionally across them.

I know beans about gearboxes, so I can only make a mundane comment on your wording. I'll leave "I'm a continental" alone since, technically, it is correct, but a better wording for the rest might be "have driven across the UK severa

Many thanks. I erroneously thought it was symmetrical.

Does one drive a motorbike? I would have said "ridden", but I suppose that that is ambiguous.
If not obvious, I ask from a position of ignorance of these things.
