Tyrant/ tyrany (pronunciation)

1. tyrant [|ta?r?nt]
2. tyranny [|t?r?ni]

When I found "ty" in tyrany is pronounced as "|ta?", I was pretty sure that "ty" in tyranny should be pronounced as "|ta?" like the formal one.
Do you not pronounce tyranny like that?
If not, why do you think people pronounce them differently even thought they are(look) similar?

Top answer

The reason for the difference in pronunciation is probably quite involved. Just accept ty rant as in neck-t ie and ty ranny as in b ee r.

That would be an "Oops!"

You shouldn't have been so sure!

The two are pronounced differently.

Similarly, see lyre and lyric (related) and pyre and pyrrhic (unrelated).
