Typo?

Sailors, who used pine pitch to caulk their vessels and to keep their pigails togehther,

were called tars.

I have looked up pigails in dictionaries only to fail.

I'm so curious about what this pigail is. Maybe it's a typo?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I think a pig t ail is now commonly called a braid. Maybe one of the women here will correct me if I am mistaken. Here is a picture of a woman with two braids.
