"Typically" or "gradually"???

Please look at the following question.

"In the short run,the world recession will ___ lead to a rise in unemployment and a fall in inflation"
A) typically B) gradually C) preferably D) barely

The correct answer is A) typically. Could you teach me why B) gradually can't be the best answer?
I think B) gradually is a better answer than A) typically.
Thank you for your answer in advance.
