what type of sentence is this: I asked him what the dumbest thing he had ever done was, and he said that it was when he rode a golf cart and almost tipped it over. ( i need to know if it is compound, complex, or compound-complex).

It does have two independent clauses, but if you look closely there are also subordinate clauses.

It's a compound-complex sentence, ie both compound and complex.
