Vocabulary

types of gasoline

Hi,

(1) Do supreme and premium mean exactly the same type of gasoline (petrol)? Which term is preferable in AE? in BE?

(2) Would it be ok to say, "$20 worth of plus please" (if you have to buy gas through the gas station operator :-) ... not necessarily in the USA or Canada ..maybe somewhere in Scandinavia?) Or maybe it is uncommon/broken English to omit "regular" in "$20 worth of regular plus please"?

We used to call it 'ethyl'. Here, we now call it 'high-test'. and I also think that some brands carry more than one 'premium', the higher of which may be 'super'.

  • Just don't ask for 'regular'.
  • I've never heard of 'regular plus', which sounds like a real waffle, but it may exist.

There are SEVERAL interesting pieces of information (new to me) in your comments, MM.
I will need to check the internet for high-test/ethyl to get a better idea of the "gasolyne nomenclature"...
I really like your comments! Thanks a lot!
