Type of usage.

She began to tell a story. A story of a curse with great power.
A new twist on an old tale. The story was well received.
The runner was beaten to the finish line. So close yet so far.


He was a poor employee. Sometimes late. Never on time.


Are these italicised parts all phrases? Should commas be used instead of a period?

an old tale, but with a new twist. The story was well received."


Line 3 should be: "...beaten at the finish line, so close yet so far away."
