two years earlier

Hi teachers,
Could you possibly tell me the meaning of "two years earlier" in the below sentence?

He didn't know the girl who had died violently nine years earlier.

Does "nine years earlier" here mean" two years before" ?

"Nine years earlier" means "nine years before," not "two years before."

Earlier today they sent a letter to me saying that he would not come.

"Earlier today" means today, but earlier than right now. "Earlier today I had a headache, but I feel fine now."

"Later this evening" means later on in the same evening (today). Suppose the phone rings and interrupts my dinner. I might say, "I'm eating dinner right now. Can I call you back later this evening?"

You are having real problems with the concepts of earlier and later, aren't you. Isn't there a similar concept in your own language? If not, I suppose it could be difficult.

Can I ask why you thought 'nine years earlier' would relate to a period of two years? Unless this was a typo then there does seem to be a real problem with u
