Two ways of asking a question

Hi,

I could come up with the following two ways to ask a question. I am not sure which one more appropriate and why?

1.What rates of returns do you use in your model?

2.What are the rates of return you use in your model?

Thanks,

MG.

To me, it's a tossup, MG.
Personally, I'd use the first, because its shorter and smoother (rates of return - singular).
