You can say "almost twice as big/large as ..." or "almost twice that of ...", but one would need to see the continuation too. "big" feels a bit more informal than "large".

Instead of the quoted part above, in this context, I'd write twice as big as, without 'compared to'.

I think you might have got a better reply if you had included what you're going to add later in the sentence.
