Two sets of questions on articles

Can you please tell me why there are the articles thes here?

1. The last two things this nation needs ...

2. Having lived in Japan for the most of his life, ...

3. Yoneed a very large vocabulary.

4. The answer to all these questions is a Yes. (Can it be, "The answer to all these questions is "Yes.")

Sorry this just came up, would you still place a period inside the word "Yes"?

Would you include the article "the" in the place indicated?

3. vocabulary cannot take the because the idea is not that you need some specific vocabulary but that you need any vocabulary, just so long as it is very large. [I / you / ...] need a ... is a typical pattern for saying the sort of thing that
