Two sentences with "further."

Is the use of "further" natural in the sentences below?

Would you prefer another word than "further" in any of the sentences?

1. Sean and Krissy are walking through a park in silence. They walk a little further, then sit at a bench.

2. I wasn't in the mood to talk, so I turned away to avoid further conversation.

They're both fine. When the context is distance , as in #1, you can use 'farther', but not in #2.

I would prefer sitting on a bench. Further is correct in both sentences. Farther is also possible in the first sentence because physical distance is meant.
