Two sentences?

1. "Sometimes we avoid doing the things we want to do because we're afraid, but when you actually try them, you'll know they're not as scary as you thought."

2. "If you help people and expect repayment then there's nothing laudable of you helping them."

Are they correct? Can they be simplified?
