Two questions on one example sentence

Hi. Please help me with these questions on the following example sentence.

1. Are the present and present perfect tenses correct since the suspect is currently hiding there (reference by "where") for no. 1 and the suspect is still hiding there up to the present for no.2?

The police found out (1) where the suspect is / (2) where the suspect has been hiding.

2. I think we can attach the preposition "at" in sentences like "They found out where he has been staying at," but I am not sure we can attach the preposition "into" in the part underlined for the following example sentence.

The police found out where the weapon was thrown (into?).
