Two questions for serving

1. When would you use the first phrase and the second phrase?

We have to take care of business at hand.

We have to take care of the business at hand.

As to the article the in bold letters, should I delete it and would it be more correct (attaching the article for the first noun to itself)?

2. Why is that we say "telephone number" and not "telephone numbers" when a person's "telelephone number" is usually consist of many numbers?

His telephone number (not numbers??) is (not are??) ...

1. I would only use the second one. Which business? The business at hand.

1a. You can leave it in or leave it out.

2. It's many digits, but together they form one number. Would you say that 144 is numbers because it has a 1 and two 4's? His telephone number is .. My lucky number is... etc.
