two questions: dependent clause and use of the word 'via'

1. How far a space there should be for a dependent clause like the one below to be considered correct? I feel the one below is correct but the existence of the phease 'going on a trip to Mt. XXX' in between makes the dependency factor less palatable (if I could say that) and more prone to confusion. How close a dependent clause like this has to be to the subject it is modifying or describing?

Later this winter, a group of twenty students going on a trip to Mt. XXX, led by their teacher, John Doe.

2. Could the word 'via' be used with a rather detailed phrase like the one below? Can I replace it with the word 'through'?

1-- Generally, the closer the better, but there is no rule and the distance can be quite far as long as semantics and syntax remain clear. Your sentence is clear enough, except that you have given it no main verb. 2-- Yes and yes.
