Two questions

Someone helps me to figure out the right answer?

The ansewers are 1. D and 2. B!!

And I don't understand why B is not a correct answer in the first question.

I choose A for the sencond question, and I wonder what the strcture of the sentence is.

In #1, B is no good because it is not in passive voice. Only D is a passive-voice nonfinite clause; all the other answers are active voice. In addition, there is no real difference between B and C (although = despite); therefore, neither of them can be the single right answer.

As for #2, B is not the right answer. The correct answer is indeed yours: it is A. There is an error in the

Sorry, I meant that the meanings are the same. 'Initiating' would indeed be a noun there with 'despite', while it is a participle with 'although'. The two answers remain wrong because of voice.
