two questions

Hi,

1. Please tell me what this part is grammatically.

When these things are created, ..., it'll be a huge achievement if you can keep them in the lab. But getting out and taking over, never in our imagination could this happen.

2. Can 'this' and 'that' here be uncountable nouns?

I think the right sentence is "But them getting out taking over, never in our imagination could this happen." What is this part grammatically?
