Two punctuation questions involving the words "so" and "Then" and one extra question on the article

Hi.

A. Do you think a comma before the word "so" is correct/needed?

1. Put that word in the space, and cross out the word, so you don't use it again.

2. If you miss 3 classes, you are below the forty percentile mark, so you will get 2 points.

B. Do you think a comma is needed after the word "Then" in no. 2 and don't need one after the same word in no.1?

1.Then find the same symbol on this page.

2.Then, you should go on to find the same symbol on this page.

C. Do you think the definite article "the" is needed after the words "tax" and "service"? Do you think when you use the word "service" in an uncountable sense, it (usually?) refers to the quality of the service and when used it countably, it means a specific service?

(situation in front of a registration table in a hotel)

Clerk: Sir, (the??) tax is 7 percent and (the??) service is 10 per cent extra.

Top answer

A. Do not put a comma after the so. You would be breaking up a clause if you did.

  • A.
  • Do not put a comma after the so.
  • You would be breaking up a clause if you did.
  • You put commas after opening "So"s because in that situation it functions as an opening word.
  • A good rule of thumb is if you can remove the word and the sentence still works, you should put a comma.

It depends on the context.
"Then find the same symbol on this page!" as a rhetorical order does
