Two phrases from the Beatles song Girl

Hello from Bulgaria!Could someone explain the sense of the phrases from the 1st and the 3rd verses of the famous song Girl - "came to stay" and "puts you down" ?
The couplets are:
" Is there anybody going to listen to my story
All about the girl who came to stay? "

and
"She's the kind of girl who puts you down
When friends are there, you feel a fool."

                                                                     Thanks in advance!
