Two people have the same item

If two people have the same item. For example: The two girls have the same pen. Is it correct to use the singular or plural to identify the item? Please advise.

Singular, but I think you would normally hear "same kind of pen" or something like that. It's not like a hairdo, where they can't possibly jointly own it.

Do you mean that two people share one pen, or do you mean that they each have a pen of the same type?
