Two past tenses or past perfect + past tense?

I have a question.
Which sentence is correct?
1) I had crossed the desert and came back
2) I crossed the desert and came back
If both sentences are correct, then is there difference in meaning between these two?
Past perfect confuses me.......

When do I use 1) I had crossed the desert and come back.
and when do I use 2) I crossed the desert and came back.

I thought past perfect requires a simple past tense to indicate an action was complete before the past perfect
ex. I had made my

I crossed and desert and came back. I must say it wasn't easy at all.
