Two past simple in a sentence

Hello,


1- Can we have two past simple tense verbs in a sentence, please? If yes, would you say some examples please?

2- Is this sentence correct:

He went to the college and became a doctor.

Thank you very much for your answer.

But there was a rule on this case. Going to college is an earlier action than becoming a doctor. I think that rule said, the first action that happened more past should be in the past perfect form and the next one (newer) in past simple. Is such a rule right? And if so, why doesn't it apply well in the above sentence, please?

So using past perfect for the sentence is only for emphasis.
