Which of these two passages is better?
It was difficult to give the dog away, as we all got used to him. But only one thing that softened our feelings/pain was that he would be happy there with his new family.

Hi, Only #2 is correct. But more natural is this. It was difficult to give the dog away, as we had all got (American - gotten ) used to him.
