Two independent clauses? Fish?

There is no need to buy a fishing book, it's a waste of time.

Are these two independent clauses? Or can I just use a comma instead of semicolon because the second part is just a complete thought of the sentence?

Thank you for taking your time to answer.

In terms of grammar, each part is structured as an independent clause, so use a semi-colon or a period. If you really want to stress the connection, try to use a suitable conjunction, eg because. Clive
