Two grammatical questions

I have two questions about the passage below.

(1) Is “the language” in the second sentence appropriate? I feel “a foreign language” or “learning a foreign language” or “it” is better.

(2) Is “for” in the last sentence necessary? I think it’s unnecessary because the writer refers to two benefits, which are (1) opening ... and (2) helping ...

In the case of both countries, many people believe that learning a foreign language is unnecessary. This causes them to look upon the language as a kind of luxury, rather than a necessity. That is unfortunate because of the benefits of learning a language, such as opening your mind to a new way of thinking or for helping different cultures better understand one another.
