Two grammatical questions

Q1: John is your friend, isn't he?

(a) Yes, he is.
(b) Yes, it is.
(c) He is.
(d) No, he is.

The correct answer is (a), but how about (c)? I think it can also be correct if the respondent pronounce it, like "He IS." What do you think?

Q2: His father won't allow him to marry her till he knows ( ) she really is.

The correct answer is 'what,' but I think 'who' is also correct. What is your opinion? And, which do you think is more appropriate to this question?
