Two Grammar Questions

1. We heard him _____ this story yesterday.
A) To tell
B) Tell
C) Told
D) Had told
E) Has told

Past Simple or Past Perfect? I think, Past Simple.

2. We saw _____ the paper.
A) Them signing
B) Them to sign
C) They sign
D) They to sign
E) They signing

In my test, "them signing" is the correct answer. Why not 'they signing'? For me it's better.

Verbs of perception, e.g., see, hear, take an object pronoun (him, me, us, etc.) and either a plain verb or an -ing verb.

We heard him tell the story. / We heard him telling the story.
We saw them sign the document. / We saw them signing the document.

The only tense involved is the tense of the first verb, past simple in both cas
