Two doubts about verbs in reported speech

1) He said, "I'm taking an exam next Monday." How do I reword this sentence using reported speech? Do I have to write He said he would take an exam the following Monday. or is it also correct to write He said he was taking an exam the following Monday.?

2) I wouldn't mind if you told me you don't/didn't want to go rafting with me. Which one is correct in this context, the Present simple or the Past simple, given that the verb depends on the if clause of second conditional sentence?

  • or is it also correct to write He said he was taking an exam the following Monday.?
  • If the "monday" (the next monday ) is still in future at the time of reporting and if it is still the next monday at the time of reporting, I'd say "He said he is taking an exam next Monday" , but If the time in the original speech (or direct speech) has gone, at the time of reporting, into the past , I'd say "He said he was taking an exam the following Monday" .
