Two commas in a friendly greeting...

Hello,

Please tell me which is correct...

"Hi, John," or is it "Hi John,"

Is it a matter of preference or did I miss the memo?

Thank you,

I'm sure your English teacher of 30 years ago would say that the comma had to be there, but I generally do not include the comma in an e-mail. I would probably inlcude it if I were writing dialogue in a book.
