Two comma questions

Hi,

I thought formulae may be the most concise way to ask my questions.

1) Dependent clause (,) Dependent clause , Independent clause

How do I decide if the comma (,) is necessary? I assume it is not always necessary. I think I have asked this question previously, but I just would like clarification; one determing factor is if the second dependent clause is essential or non-essential, I think.

2) Independent clause (,) Coordinating conjunction Dependent clause, Independent clause

Is the comma (,) necessary in this case? Is it always necessary or is its presence based on circumstances?

For this example, I will show an example:

Verbals are derived from verbs(,) but because they are nonfinite verb forms, they cannot serve as the predicate of a clause.

Thanks.

Formulae do not work here; formulae only sometimes work with English. Your clause placement is arbitrary, and there is room for permutations-- are, for instance, your dependent clauses nested? Much depends on clause length and structure and relative conceived dependence/independence.

  • However, #1 is normally as you have stated, and #2 normally requires the comma.
  • Short independent clauses may obviate its use.
