Two colons in a sentence with the second in adirect quote.

Hi,

I am editing an article, and the author uses the phrase...The _____ is as follows:...then the author proceeds to insert a direct quote that happens to contain another colon. Can two colons be in the same sentence if the second is part of a direct quote?

Hi, I don't see any reason not to do this, except that I'd hesitate if the quote were long and complicated. However, my preference would be simply to replace the first quote with a period. The ....
