Two clauses with a shared phrase

Hi. I think the example sentence below shows two separate clauses although the clauses seem to share the phrase "After the morning picnic." And therefore would you say a comma before the conjunction "and" is needed? Thank you for your help in advance.

After the morning picnic, he went home, and she went back to work.
