Two clauses connect with a comma correct?

Hi. Please help. Could we have a sentence pattern where two independent clauses are connected with a comma, like below? I do realize the two clauses are short and I think contains the nature of exhortation, unlike the basic sentences that contain a subject, verb and object. Could we have a sentence like below as part of our writing, although not as part of very informal writing? Thank you in advance.

eg,

You need to be informed. Get the truth, listen to our news.

I wish you got this. His was half truth, hers was full truth.

It is common enough, but not in formal writing. A critic of a formal essay calls this a comma-splice error and will advise you to repair it like this, for instance: I wish you understood this : his was a half truth, and hers was the whole truth.
