Two centres don't make a right

Hello,

After a drunken discussion with friends, we came to no conclusion.

What is the difference between centRE and centER?

I always thought one is English based (RE), and the other American (ER), but others argue one is used in math (RE), and the other for locations (ER)?

Which is true?

Hi Kafelnik, The 're' spellings-- centre, theatre, etc-- are BrE, while the 'er' spellings-- center, theater-- are AmE spellings, although there is some variation (at least in my case) among individuals and third countries. That's the first time I've heard the math/location concept. I know I have never used 'centre' for the center of a circle.
