Two and six are / is eight?

Hi all,

I'm just wondering how I can say 2+6=8 in English?

Which one is correct?

Two and six is eight vs. Two and six are eight.

How much are two and six? vs. How much is two and six?

Thanks for your help in advance!!

I remember reading in a grammar book that both is and are are correct. Native speakers will probably tell us which one is actually used. CB

Hi,

Sums and products of mathematical processes are expressed as singular.

Two and six is eight.

Thanks!

I'm with CB on this one. It comes up in my classes often, and I've found that I'm liable to say either.
