Two actions it the past, a continuous action happened after an event - which tenses should we use?

Hi everyone, this is my first post here. I hope I do not violate any rule by posting it;)

I've got such a (correct) sentence:

We were having a good time when the lights went out at the party.

...but I am wandering what if we suppose that the really good fun was without the lights.
Which one of the sentences below would be correct (if any)?

1)We were having a good time after the lights had gone out.
2)We were having a good time after the lights went out.

Any help will be appreciated!

Thank you for your detailed answer.

You should not use past progressive unless it is a continuing action during which something else happened.
This is very valuable remark.
