The experimenter anesthetized the subjects and painted two obvious red spots above one eye and the opposite ear.

About the two spots, which is correct?

1: two spots on the eye and two spots on the ear (i.e two spots each)
2: one spot on the eye and one spot on the ear (i.e. one spot each)
3: ambiguous

2) Two spots:
The experimenter anesthetized the subjects and painted two obvious red spots, one above one eye and another above the opposite ear.
3: ambiguous
As written, although #2 might be inferred.
