From time to time, I hear allusions to twelve cents. Can anyone say why it's that particular amount of money?

Here's a reference to 'twelve cent Archie'. It may be no more than the fact that he appeared in a popular cartoon magazine that happened to cost twelve cents. I just wondered if there was more to it
