The best way is to do a picture search on google. While they may be the same species generally (I'm not a bilogist, so i don't know whether this is scientifically correct) the difference is obvious when you look at pictures.

turtles live in the ocean and usually land to lay their eggs. They also have fins rather than legs.

Tortoises have legs, and spend only part of their time in

Tortoise and turtle are two different reptiles. The most distingushing difference between these two species is that the former dwells well on land and the latter dwells well in water.

Because turtles have flippers rather than legs, it is difficult for them to walk on land.

There are plenty of turtles who have legs rather than flippers (e.g. snapping turtles), but the distinction drawn in the US is generally that turtles spend most of their life in the water and tortoises spend most of their life on the land. I think, however, that this is an example of terminology that varies between the US/UK/Australia, so don't get in any arguments about it.
