Turn/bend

Hi

Is there any difference between "turn" and "bend"?

A certain guy was in the mines. It was dark.

He put out his arms again, trying to gauge the width of the shaft here. He touched what he believed was the dead-end wall, but nothing was on the other side. He kept moving to that side, but nothing was there. Puzzled for a moment, the truth finally struck him. This was a turn or bend in the mineshaft. He got his bearings .................

I can't see any major difference. On reflection, I would say "a bend of the passage" and "there was a turn".
