How about

I accidentally electrocuted my dog when I tinkered with the iPod around him.

Did my dog die?

Hi,

I'd guess not, since I don't think an ipod can killl a dog. If I wanted to know, I'd ask an additional question about the matter.

'Electrocute' does tend to sound serious, if not fatal. A common phrase for more minor cases is 'It gave my dog an electric shock'.
