Turn on the air conditioning / the air conditioner

I hear "Turn on the TV.", but I hear "Turn on the air conditioning." I think that "Turn on the air conditioner" might be more correct and natural in terms of correlation, or could you tell me why people say air conditioning, not air conditioner in the situation? Is there a meaning difference between them?

Thank you so much as usual and have a good day.

I believe that conditioner/conditioning are used pretty much interchangeably, whether correctly or incorrectly.
