Turn off vs. shut off vs. switch off

Hi, what are the most common situations for these verbs to be used at?

(Especially for lights, engines and similarly. E. g. I don't know if I can use some of these for [switching off] lights interchangeably.)

Thank you.

You can use them pretty much interchangeably and few will protest. Generally, things with ***** that turn clockwise/counterclockwise are more usually turned on/off, things with bipolar switches are switched on/off, and things of a more complex nature (like heavy machinery) are often shut off (not 'shut on', please note).
