Turn in resignation

Hello,

I've just come across an expression: "He turned in his resignation." I looked it up in a dictionary, but the definitions of "turn in" there doesn't point to the context in which the expression was used.
It suggests "hand in" or "give in" instead.
Could you, please confirm that "turn in one's resigniation" is incorrect?

Thank you

The context is that a man is about to give up his job, so he comes to his boss's office and leaves his resignation.

"The isolated sentence "He turned in his resignation" means "He [handed in / submitted] his resignation (to somebody)" no matter what the dictionary says."
