turn away

Wassily Kandinsky wrote:

"It is the spirit that rules over matter, and not the other way around. The experienced eye is easily fascinated, but this enchantment soon ends, and the soul, swiftly undeceived, turns away."

Please explain what Kandinsky means by "turns away."

Thank you.
